Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners needs reform | Opinion

The Texas , but attaching it to the licensing agency is not the right kind, writes Jodi B. Long, president-elect of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association. No one more than Texas veterinarians wants to see the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners return to full health.. It is in the best interests of veterinarians, the public, and their animals that TBVME investigate complaints speedily and fairly and discipline those who violate clinical standards.

Veterinarians agree with many of Sunset’s recommendations on enforcement activities. TBVME should, and wants to, put the highest priority on complaints that pose the greatest risk to the public. It should post veterinarians’ complete and accurate disciplinary records online. The state simply must make an adequate investment in the board. The best plan and the best outside advice will fail without the resources necessary to execute them.

We agree that responsibility and transparency are critical. Lawmakers, veterinarians and the public need to monitor progress toward defined goals. The Legislature should mandate that these agencies work together under a formal agreement that requires regular and timely reports.
