The specific models affected include the 2000 through 2006 BMW 3 Series , including the M3; the 2000 to 2003 5 Series , including M5; and the 2000 through 2004 X5 SUV. “These vehicles have already been included in several Takata-related recalls; however, despite intense customer outreach efforts by BMW since 2016, they remain unrepaired and, as the airbag inflators age further, the risk of serious injury or death increases,” BMW said in a release.

The automaker goes on to explain those outreach efforts have included “phone, text, email, letters and postcards, and social media,” means which have mostly worked to get hundreds of thousands of owners to have their BMWs’ airbags repaired, free of charge. It estimates about 87 per cent of BMWs with the defective parts have been fixed to date.Article content
