A new Bluesky app called Flashes is being developed to focus on image and video sharing, potentially making it a viable alternative to Instagram.
A new Bluesky app called Flashes is poised to potentially let users leverage it as a substitute for Instagram or other photo-sharing services. This is a boon for anyone who found the abundance of text on Twitter/X replacement Bluesky to be overwhelming. An app developer working on the social media platform is now attempting to help it serve as a replacement for more image-centric offerings like Meta's Instagram .
This new project, called Flashes, comes from third-party Bluesky developer Sebastian Vogelsang. Like Vogelsang's earlier Skeets—an alternative front-end for accessing the open-source service via iPads, created before Bluesky Social PBC released its dedicated mobile app—Flashes essentially offers a different way to view the content people are already posting on the service. In this case, it emphasizes images and video sharing, effectively filtering out text posts and making the scrolling experience through your various posts and skeets more akin to, well, Instagram.Crucially, because it's still operating on the Bluesky architecture, Flashes—which is slated for public release in a few weeks—allows you to bypass the service's current limitations on image or video uploads. You'll still be confined to four images per post and one minute of video. However, let's be honest, a significant portion of our presence on Bluesky these days stems from the desire to experience the core feel of major social media networks without succumbing to the creeping sensation of slowly feeding our lives into a monstrous entity, controlled by sociopathic billionaires, that relentlessly devours reality one data-laden bite at a time. (Consider, for instance, the growing aversion to using one of Mark Zuckerberg's similar offerings as the company's U.S. ban looms closer.)Therefore, if Flashes can capture even a semblance of the Instagram experience, even if it falls short in features, it will have already accomplished more than half of what we'd want from it
