Steve Burns, best known as Steve from Blue's Clues, responds bluntly to rumors of his untimely death. Blue's Clues was a top-rated children's program from 1996 to 2006, with Steve hosting the show until his 2002 departure. The show holds the title of many firsts, including being the first cutout animation series for young children and one of the first preschool-level shows to incorporate American Sign Language.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Variety, Burns discusses the rumors that he'd died after leaving Blue's Clues. Gossip surrounding Burns' disappearance from the public eye included everything from him dying in a car crash, to overdosing on drugs, to being murdered by the show's producers. However, Burns is very much alive and says he often tried to make media appearances solely to dispel those rumors.
“I was under the working assumption that most of y’all thought I was dead. That rumor was so persistent and so indelible that I assumed it was a cultural preference. I eventually just took the hint. I kept my head down and left public life.”How Steve Is Returning To The Blue's Clues Franchise Burns says that while filming Blue's Clues, he struggled with severe depression and that exiting the show gave him time to focus on his mental health.
Though the series ended in 2006, Blue's Clues saw a 2019 revival called Blue's Clues & You!. The original show's creators, Angela C. Santomero and Traci Paige Johnson, said they had tried for years to bring Blue's Clues back to Nickelodeon and finally succeeded in 2018 when they were allowed to develop a 20-episode reboot. This reboot has been continually renewed for further seasons and is currently in season 4.
Blue's Clues might've been beloved by children during its run, but since the series ended -particularly since Burns' departure - the show has taken on a new popularity as older viewers reminisce on the nostalgia of their favorite kids' shows. Though Burns says he ultimately stepped away from the show because he'd never intended on becoming a children's entertainer long-term, he was unaware of how important Steve and Blue's Clues would become to millions of people.
