• Liftoff aboard the company’s New Shepard rocket from Blue Origin’s West Texas launch site is expected sometime Monday morning.STS-7 mission specialist Sally Ride floats in the microgravity of low Earth orbit on the aft flight deck of the orbiter Challenger during STS-7 in 1983.

Blue Origin, which was founded by Bezos in 2000, said this mission will be the first all-female flight crew since Soviet cosmonaut• The first American woman in space was Sally Ride, who reached orbit aboard the NASA Space Shuttle mission STS-7 in 1983., carried out by NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir, occurred outside the International Space Station in October 2019. Journalist Gayle King told “Entertainment Tonight’s” Nischelle Turner recently that she is “going to space — and I’m really psyched about it.”“The obvious: You just don’t want anything to go wrong,” King said. King said she asked her children, Kirby and Will, as well as her longtime close friend Oprah if she should go.The 70-year-old co-host of “CBS Mornings” said she recently did a Zoom call with her felliow crew members and had a moment with Perry. “I went to Michael Strahan’s house and sat down and looked him in his face and he was very reassuring to me,” King said. “And so I feel good about it.”“She is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come,” according to a statement from Blue Origin.Top row, from left: Amanda Nguyen, Katy Perry and Aisha Bowe. The group includes “CBS Mornings” cohost Gayle King, pop star Katy Perry, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, former NASA rocket scientist and CEO ofThe Blue Origin flight today will go up and come right back down, in less time — about 10 minutes — than it takes most people to get to work. This is a suborbital flight, which means the New Shepard vehicle will not travel fast enough or at the right angle to enter orbit around Earth. However, it will travel more than 100 kilometers above Earth, which is widely considered to be the edge of outer space, and reach speeds topping about 3,500 kilometers per hour , which is about three times the speed of sound. The New Shepard crew capsule will launch atop a small rocket. After the engine burns through most of its fuel, the capsule will separate from the rocket, allowing the spacecraft to briefly continue upward before the capsule almost hovers at the top of its flight path, giving the passengers a few minutes of weightlessness.
