In the BBC's latest procedural thriller, cops are neither heroes nor villains – just ordinary people trying to do their job
– the man of 1,000 plot twists . Get past the superficial resemblances to other police procedurals and’ action-packed and quietly addictive first episode was very much its own thing. The focus wasn’t on cops and robbers but on marginalised communities which regard the police not as a first line of defence but as an instrument of oppression. It starred Siân Brooke as Grace, an idealistic former social worker early in her probation as a police officer on the beat in Belfast.
Things got messy fast. A high-speed pursuit of a stolen car ended in humiliation for Grace when it turned out that the vehicle belonged to a gangland boss with republican links. He was a person of interest to undercover cops with – boo, hiss – English accents, who wanted local police to keep their noses clean. And so the theft was brushed under the carpet.
Grace’s idealism contrasted with the cynicism of her fellow officers, including a jaded veteran portrayed by Richard Dormer . This was made clear when Grace tried to help the mother of the car thief. Her son had been recruited by the criminals against her will and she was now having a violent breakdown. The message from the higher-ups was to stay clear, but Grace violated those orders and attempted to make a difference. There was a tough learning curve, too, for fellow newbie Annie .
