Charlie Coyle is set to remain a key piece of the Columbus Blue Jackets’ plans for years to come after signing a six-year, $36 million contract that keeps him in Columbus through the 2031-32 season.
Coyle, a center who made an immediate impact in his first season with the Blue Jackets, was a pending unrestricted free agent and could have tested the market this offseason. Instead, the 34-year-old forward said he wanted to stay and help the organization build.
“I've seen what we have. I've seen our potential. I'm excited for it and it's something I want to be here for and work towards. I've grown to love these guys and love Columbus," Coyle said.
"Having Rick Bowness back, that adds to it too. I'm pretty pumped to see what a full year of Bones will do for us. I want to keep playing for a guy like that. ” Coyle is coming off a 58-point season in which scored 20 goals and tied career highs with 38 assists and seven power-play goals.
He also has been one of the league’s most durable players, not missing a game over the past five seasons. General manager Don Waddell said received more than ten calls in the last two weeks asking about their plan for Coyle but keeping him in Columbus was a top priority and described the signing as a foundational move for the roster.
“This was an important one because now we can continue to build around it knowing that we have that right shot center that we know very well,” Waddell said. “We can continue to build around the edges with it. ” This past season also marked the first time in Coyle’s pro career that he missed the playoffs. He said that did not deter him from wanting to stay here; instead, he is using it as motivation.
"I want to right the ship and get it where we can get it. I know the potential. I've seen it. I know what we have in here and I want to work at that and work want to work through it, and I look forward and seeing where we can get to," he said.
Waddell said the Blue Jackets still have plenty of work to do this summer, including finalizing other player contracts and hiring new assistant coaches. The GM will also be busy scouting future talent. The 2026 NHL Draft Combine takes place from May 31 through June 6 in Buffalo, New York. The NHL Draft begins on June 26.
