Beyoncé just played her first full live performance in four years to an invite-only audience. Given the performance’s location, some are calling it a controversial move.

Some fans questioned the decision to host the epic concert in Dubai, especially as artists have for a few years steadily been encouraged to boycott performances in places with poor human rights records, like Israel or Saudi Arabia. In the U.S., too,states like Arizona, Texas, or North Carolina, have come under calls for boycotts over their anti-abortion, anti-trans, or extreme immigration laws. Whenwas released, it was heralded as a love letter to Black queer dance music.
