Blue Cross Blue Shield announced in November that it would"change how it evaluates billed time on professional claims for anesthesia services" in Connecticut, New York and Missouri in 2025.Under the new policy, the Chicago-based company said it would determine a specific amount of time it would cover anesthesia costs for, depending on a procedure.
"Claims submitted with reported time above the established number of minutes will be denied," the company said in its announcement.The American Society of Anesthesiologists called it an"unprecedented move," saying the company"unilaterally declared it will no longer pay for anesthesia care if the surgery or procedure goes beyond an arbitrary time limit, regardless of how long the surgical procedure takes.
