PETALING JAYA: Ng Tze Yong’s hopes of getting a boost ahead of the start of the qualifying period for the 2024 Paris Olympics next month were dashed when he suffered a first-round exit in the Asian Championships.

Tze Yong could not rise to the occasion and lost out 17-21, 18-21 to Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu in Dubai yesterday.

This time Cheuk Yiu, who is coached by former Malaysian singles coach Wong Tat Meng, used a fast and aggressive game to come away with the win. The 22-year-old will now need to put the disappointing defeat behind him and turn his attention to the Sudirman Cup from May 14-21. Tze Yong needs to collect as many points as possible to break into the top 16 by the end of the one-year qualifying period.
