San Francisco Centre previously lost its other major anchor tenant and is facing a possible debt auction
Bloomingdale’s will soon close its flagship department store in the ailing San Francisco Centre , the giant downtown mall that previously lost its other major anchor tenant and is facing a possible debt auction.
Former Mayor London Breed said last February that Macy’s was looking to sell the store property. At the same time, the company announced a wave of 150 store closures scheduled to occur through 2026. “While there’s still cause for optimism about our economic comeback, there’s no denying this is a gut punch,” wrote Dorsey, who said he was in touch with Lurie’s office to explore options for convincing Bloomingdale’s to reconsider its decision.
“There are a multitude of factors that go into business decisions like this — some beyond our control as a City, and some within our control. It’s true that retail is changing. It’s also true that the preponderance of remote work doesn’t help,” he wrote. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield cited unsafe conditions and a lack of law enforcement in the area as the drivers behind poor sales.
