A new piece of federal legislation is pushing the controversial northern corridor road project in St. George closer to reality. The Bureau of Land Management reapproved a proposal to construct a four-lane Northern Corridor Highway near the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area.

In 2018, the Utah Department of Transportation applied for a right-of-way for the highway northwest of St. George to help ease traffic congestion. The BLM analyzed potential impacts to public lands resources and dismissed a previously endorsed option to upgrade the Red Hills Parkway after the Department of Transportation stated that the upgrade would not be technically or economically feasible.Proposed development of reserve lands sparks debate in Washington County Washington County Commissioner Adam Snow said the plan is "the only feasible way to balance conservation and provide for our county’s transportation and recreation needs." According to a press release from the City of St. George, the route was deemed optimal by traffic engineers and wildlife biologists, as it "addresses traffic congestion while minimizing impacts to the environment." The Northern Corridor will connect Washington Parkway on the east to Red Hills Parkway on the west, through some of the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area. "This new route will enable vehicles to travel between the Ivins/Santa Clara and Washington/Hurricane areas bypassing the increasing traffic congestion in downtown St. George," the press release states. "This project will improve traffic flow while preserving the livability and walkability in downtown St. George as well the unique characteristics of the Red Cliffs NCA."In a separate press release, Conserve Southwest Utah, a nonprofit that advertises protecting public lands, water, and desert livability, noted that the project had been stopped several times before over concerns about wildlife, public safety, legal compliance, and community opposition. Stacey Wittek, the Executive Director of Conserve Southwest Utah, called the decision "deeply disappointing." "This is a deeply disappointing decision for our organization and for the thousands of community members who have continually voiced their opposition to the highway," she said. "But the fight to protect Red Cliffs National Conservation Area is far from over. We are carefully assessing every available option to protect this important and iconic land for future generations." "The proposed Northern Corridor Highway would carve a four-lane, high-speed road through designated critical habitat for the threatened Mojave desert tortoise within Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, damage iconic red rock landscapes, disrupt treasured outdoor recreation opportunities, and set a dangerous precedent for Congressionally-protected public lands across the U.S.," the press release continued.Several lanes were blocked as officers responded responded to an incident near 700 East and 1300 South.Several lanes were blocked as officers with the Salt LakReports have circulated that federal immigration authorities are exploring the use of a Salt Lake City property for a potential Immigration and Customs EnforcemA 14-year-old Utah County girl has died after an off-highway vehicle rollover involving a group of teens.Jalee Anderson was critically injured Friday night whilUtah Senator Mike Lee twice called for the public execution of Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk.“Tyler Robinson publicly executed CA 78-year-old man was struck and killed while crossing the road in Delta. The man, who has not been identified, was reportedly pushing a wheeled walker while cr
