The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for Somerset County, effective until Monday at 3 p.m. The warning is in effect due to expected blizzard conditions with near-zero visibility, snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches (up to 8 inches on higher elevations), and wind gusts as high as 65 mph. The weather service advises against travel and recommends having a winter survival kit if you must venture out.

On Sunday at 2:16 p.m. a blizzard warning was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until Monday at 3 p.m. for Somerset County . "Blizzard conditions with near zero visibility at times in snow and blowing snow.

Snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches with locally higher amounts up to 8 inches on the ridgetops and summits. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph," explains the weather service. "Sharply falling temperatures and very strong wind gusts over 50 mph will yield a quick changeover from rain to snow this afternoon. A brief period of heavy snow is possible along with a quick freeze up of slush and standing water on roadways. Snow showers will continue at varying intensity tonight into Monday." "Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening," explains the weather service. "Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle."Blizzard warnings are issued by the weather service for frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph accompanied by falling and/or blowing snow, frequently reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile for three hours or more. A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely, leading to whiteout conditions making travel extremely difficult. Do not travel. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and wait for help to arrive.
