Secretary of State Antony Blinken admitted that pressure on Israel caused Hamas to pull back from potential ceasefire and hostage deals, in an interview. Blinken stated that the focus on achieving a ceasefire/hostage agreement was seen as the quickest and most durable way to end the conflict.

He explained that Hamas pulled back when they saw Israel under public pressure, and also because they hoped for a wider conflict involving Hezbollah, Iran, and other actors attacking Israel, allowing Hamas to continue its actions. Blinken emphasized that the US worked hard to prevent this wider conflict from occurring. Although Hezbollah and Iran did attack Israel, Israel's missile defense systems and counterattacks, sometimes against the wishes of the Biden-Harris administration, proved effective
