We chat with Blindspotting showrunner and star RafaelCasal about his approach to some of the intense dance & verse sequences in season 2 of the Starz series, and whether or not Daveed Diggs will appear in the flesh:
Though it began life as a small film in 2018, Blindspotting has since gone on to become a critically acclaimed STARZ series that dives into the life of supporting character Ashley and the people in her life. Now in its second season, Blindspotting sees Ashley dealing with the aftermath of her partner Miles' prison sentence as her son Sean gets older and starts asking more questions.
When we were thinking about the show, it was like, "Well, what if we were going to drop back into the world of our version of the Bay? Who do we want to see, and what's the story that would make sense?" It's a bonus that you already know who Miles is, and you've seen who Ashley is a bit. The movie has a great moment around the gun, and around their family with Sean.
Rafael Casal: The great thing about working with Jasmine is she always wants to go there. If I come to her with an idea, and I go, "I think this would be really interesting to tackle." She's like, "Yeah, I think that you and I would have a blast in that scene together." A lot of our conversations are both writer conversations and actor conversations, and it's just really great to be able to have those simultaneously.
I really loved the scene where they tell Sean about slavery, which made me wonder: how do you decide which moments will be visualized differently, choreographed, or otherwise break the fourth wall? Verse is, for me, whenever I feel like Ashley can't explain it to Sean in her own words. I think that she writes a poem down for him to read later, and we're just hearing the poem now.
