Padres' third baseman backs up declaration by going on a tear in August
As he prepared to leave the visitors’ clubhouse at Dodger Stadium on a Sunday evening early last month, Manny Machado said something.
Machado will almost certainly play a significant role in the Padres’ push over the next five weeks, or however long it takes to determine whether they will be a playoff team. There have been 15 games this season in which Machado has driven in at least half the Padres’ runs. In five of those, he drove in all their runs. He has scored and/or driven in a run in 54 of the Padres’ 73 victories.
“He has all year,” Melvin said Wednesday. “He’s the type of guy you rely on in the middle of the order that knocks in runs, that gets big hits. He’s got a long history of doing that, a career of doing that. And he did it again.”Keeping in mind that no single player can lift an entire baseball team on his back or make them be like him, it is remarkable how universally and uniformly the Padres marvel at Machado and speak to his innate contribution to the psyche they try to maintain.
He was gifted the opportunity to grow into being who he is, called up to be a bit player on a veteran Orioles team during a playoff race late in 2012.Now he is the one with the fifth-highest WAR in the majors since 2015 and six All-Star selections and three top-five finishes in MVP voting.
