While the first Blade Runner is iconic, 2049 feels like an extraordinary refinement and enhancement of the original concept, with outstanding perfomances, visuals, and inclusion of legacy narratives/characters while still creating something new, fresh, and entirely captivating. 2049 proved that Villeneuve could handle the modern adaptation of Dune and for that reason alone should be celebrated. There's still so much to appreciate outside of that retrospective fact alone. It is by far and away the most successful piece of sci-fi writing I have ever encountered in a film. The way that the contrasting philosophies of the characters become the main source of conflict is profound. 2049, Arrival, and the Dune movies prove how well Villeneuve takes high-concept sci-fi to the next level by making them thematically accessible on a human level.Basically just as good as the original movie which is saying a lot because that is one of my favorite movies of all time. Ryan Gosling just works in the Blade Runner universe and the atmosphere and visuals were some of the best throughout. Loved the central story in this one and how it builds upon the original in surprising ways.A suitably atmospheric follow-up that zeroes in on the incredible loneliness of this sci-fi setting. Doesn't come close to the original, but it does make enough bold choices that it's worth seeing.
