With his latest donation, the billionaire private equity mogul has given more than $100 million to BRCA research in hopes of preventing related cancers through early detection and treatment.

$25 million in funding for research on pernicious genetic mutations that can lead to breast and ovarian cancer. The gift comes after the couple poured $55 million in the past seven years into University of Pennsylvania’s Basser Center for BRCA, the world’s first hub devoted to studying cancers related to BRCA mutations.

Some women with faulty BRCA genes have taken a very proactive approach. Actress Angelina Jolie, who inherited these genetic mutations, made waves in 2013 for announcing that she’d undergone a preventative double mastectomy to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer; she removed her ovaries two years later.

To broaden and organize their philanthropic efforts, the Grays brought in Chi Van Dang, the former director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Cancer Center, to be the chief science advisor for their Gray Foundation in 2018. The veteran oncology researcher quickly came up with an idea: To host a symposium where leading BRCA experts could gather and discuss issues in the field.
