The famous 'woodie' ride is one of the longest-running in the world
As the clock struck 8pm on August 23, 2023, Blackpool Pleasure Beach's famous Big Dipper turned 100 years old. The iconic ride is one of the longest-running anywhere in the world and has celebrated its centenary with a magical makeover - and party.
The striking 'onion' above the entrance, which is a true beacon for the ride, is glowing brighter than ever after a re-paint to make sure it looked its birthday best. Party guests were invited into the seaside attraction after it had it closed for live music, cupcakes and fizz.View gallery And as night fell and the drizzle subsided, the first passengers got the opportunity to take a ride moments after The Big Dipper officially reached its significant milestone.
"I've been coming since I was a boy and nothing beats the Pleasure Beach," Ken, who is in his 80s, told LancsLive, "It is just the friendliest place and I love the Big Dipper.The iconic coaster opened in 1923 at a cost of £25,000. It has carried a number of famous famous over the decades, such as Diana Dors, Wayne Rooney and Robbie Williams.
