No dusk aerial image of the Blackpool seafront with the famous Tower twinkling in the distance is complete without the resort's three illuminous piers jutting out into the sea.
The North Pier is the oldest and celebrates its 160-year anniversary in 2023, while Central is a magnet for families, with arcades, fairground rides. And while all three have been recognised as being among seven of the 'most charming British piers' by The Times, it is South Pier that stands out as being the best.
It is worth doing a 'pier crawl' during your visit or stay in Blackpool, starting at South and making your way to Central where you can enjoy lunch and family entertainment in Pirates Bay or a performance at the Showbar. The head to the North in the shadows of the tower, where you can relax in the Bloom Bar, gardens or Theatre Bar.
Visiting a seaside town's pier is a past-time for British tourists that dates to the 19th century. They are the Victorian equivalent of an airbridge. Of course, local savvy entrepreneurs soon realised they could be useful money generators and 'pleasure piers' were created.
