The BlackBerry movie, starring Jay Baruchel as Mike Lazaridis, debuts with a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score that even beats The Social Network.
The new BlackBerry biopic movie has received an astounding Rotten Tomatoes score this weekend. The film, which is based on the 2015 book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry, premiered in theaters this weekend. It stars Jay Baruchel as Mike Lazaridis, the creator of the company BlackBerry, which was responsible for the briefly popular handheld device.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Per Rotten Tomatoes, BlackBerry has debuted with a score of 98 percent after 85 different critics have weighed in, meaning that the film can already be considered Certified Fresh. The BlackBerry true story is outranking every other new scripted movie this weekend, including wide releases Book Club: The Next Chapter and Hypnotic.
Could BlackBerry Become an Awards Contender? The Social Network is an easy comparison, considering the fact that it also focused on a major figure in the tech industry just like BlackBerry's real-life characters. Even with two percentage points fewer critics in its corner, the film was a massive box office success, earning $224.9 million off its $40 million budget. It also went on to be nominated for eight Oscars and win three, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score.
It remains to be seen if BlackBerry could be an awards contender, but if it does well in theaters it could very well make a splash next season. Typically, films that are released in May have a tougher time making an impression during awards nominations . However, if the film is prominent enough, like last year's Top Gun: Maverick, it can hang tough despite competition in the Fall.
The fate of BlackBerry likely depends on how audiences respond to it. If it becomes a major word-of-mouth hit and expands into a wider release, it could very well be a frontrunner. However, a Certified Fresh score alone likely won't be able to push it as far as it would need to go.
