Black suits and no questions: How North Korea’s state-run media pack covers Kim Jong Un

By Min Joo Kim Min Joo Kim Assistant Reporter in Seoul covering South and North Korea. Email Bio Follow February 28 at 2:00 AM HANOI — As President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un shook hands to mark the start of their second summit, they were immediately peppered with a torrent of questions from the journalists present.

However, the following day, the authoritarian leader answered questions from White House reporters, including one from a Washington Post journalist, as his own press corps continued to hold back. If the North Korean state media team had anything on Kim, they weren’t about to share it with outside journalists.

After accompanying him last year on his first meeting with Trump in Singapore, the state-media pack arrived in Hanoi wearing the same red “press” bands on their arms, and the same loyalty badges, with portraits of North Korea’s late leaders, on their lapels. Its staff probably worked through the night to get the big dispatch from Hanoi into the morning newspaper, said Joo, who is based in Seoul.
