The suspension of a high school student over his loc hairstyle is testing a new law that protects against discrimination and that was created for black...
But keeping a student suspended for having long hair is a step too far. We welcome the district’s decision not to enhance the disciplinary action, as Bloom told us in an email statement. But they can also allow the student back to regular class while the courts decide.
George’s family has sued Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton for failing to enforce the CROWN Act. That suit is misplaced. Abbott supported and signed the CROWN Act and Paxton, whatever his many other problems are, isn’t the right target in a case that arose from a school district’s action. What we hope doesn’t emerge from this case is the diminishment of public school dress codes.
Meanwhile, the Barbers Hill district has been here before; in 2020 the school district was sued by DeAndre Arnold’s family. They claimed the district’s grooming policies amounted to racial discrimination. Arnold refused to cut his hair and eventually graduated in another district. That history was an impetus for the passage of the CROWN Act. While the act protects ethnic hairstyles, we aren’t sure it means anything goes.We welcome your thoughts in a letter to the editor.
