A 21-year-old Black college student was found dead hanging from a tree on the campus of Delta State University in Mississippi , prompting an investigation and a wave of online speculation. The case has stirred unease and raised comparisons to the state's history of racial violence during the Jim Crow era, although authorities insist there's no indication of foul play at this stage.
Delta State University Police Chief Michael Peeler reported that the student's body was discovered near the campus pickleball courts early Monday morning by a staff member. He stated there were no signs of a crime, adding that there wasn't an ongoing threat to students or faculty members on campus. Chief Peeler confirmed that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, along with local police and sheriff’s deputies, were assisting in the investigation. Online rumors spreading about the student having broken limbs were refuted by Bolivar County Coroner Randolph Seals Jr. In a statement to local media outlets, Coroner Seals, after conducting a preliminary examination, stated that the student did not exhibit any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with an assault. However, he didn't respond to phone calls from the Associated Press seeking further comment. The university has scheduled a press conference for Wednesday to provide additional information regarding the case. Delta State President Dan Ennis, in a video message posted on the university's Facebook page on Tuesday, acknowledged the grief felt by the community while affirming the university's resumption of operations.
