IN 2008, I wrote about Black Saturday and described this day as Bleak Saturday for many Filipinos. That was 16 years ago. Has the situation changed since then?

Black Saturday is the Sabbath day following Good Friday, or Holy Friday, commemorating the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. The use of black as the liturgical color helps explain the basis for this favored color. It is considered a sign of mourning.In the Philippines, the preferred use of the phrase 'Sabado de Gloria' is very popular. After all, the translation of Black Saturday into 'Maitim na Sabado' may not be as edifying or glorious.

Of course, they are not expected to wear real crowns of thorns, get whipped and scourged and sentenced to die on the cross!Filipinos and Black SaturdayWhat is the significance of Black Saturday for Filipinos?For many Pinoys, Black Saturday signifies the end of Holy Week. Shopping malls and markets open once more, and entertainment centers reopen promptly after Good Friday. Others continue their interrupted holidays and go off to resorts and even travel out of the country.
