Black people more likely to die quicker after dementia diagnosis by LeahMahon_
BLACK PEOPLE who are diagnosed with dementia and die at quicker rates compared to their white counterparts could be linked to a delay in receiving a diagnosis, which include cultural misunderstandings from support services, according to research.
The research team, led by Dr Naaheed Mukadam, found that although dementia rates have increased across all ethnic groups, black people are 22% more likely to get dementia in comparison to white people in a report published by the medical journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Support services were also found to be inadequate and insensitive to faith and cultural needs which posed another barrier for ethnic minority people seeking diagnoses.
