Here’s how they’re spreading awareness of hidradenitis suppurativa, plus their best advice for getting quality care.

There’s a “perfect storm” of health care problems for Black and biracial people when it comes to hidradenitis suppurativa , Olayemi Sokumbi, MD, a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic tells SELF. If you’re Black, you’re more likely than any other racial group to develop this skin condition, which can cause lumps in sensitive areas like your armpits, groin, or butt. But it can also take you years longer than other people to get diagnosed and treated.

Better access to treatment As SELF previously reported, Black and biracial people are more likely to face things that can get in the way of care, like crappy health insurance, an inability to take time off work to see a doc, and working a job outside of normal business hours. Some treatments for HS, like laser hair removal, aren’t frequently covered by insurance. That means people may have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket for something that can reduce symptoms for a lot of folks.
