After six years on the waitlist for a kidney transplant, suburban special education teacher Helena Fields was moved up on the list due to a recent change as to how African American kidney function was evaluated.

Race has now been taken out of the equation for the test. As a result, more than 14,000 African American patients nationwide were moved up on the transplant list. Fox said. "Many people didn't know it existed.

"It seems ridiculous to think that is existed for as long as it did, but when you think of the history of our country and everything that goes with that it's not surprising," Fox said.
