BlackPanther earns $28 million domestically in its opening night, surpassing the original's debut of $25 million.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has topped Black Panther's opening night box office. Black Panther, which was released in 2018 and starred Chadwick Boseman as the titular hero, had a historic theatrical run, becoming one of the highest grossing movies of all time.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The hype for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever seems to have paid off in terms of numbers, as Collider reports that the sequel has officially surpassed Black Panther in terms of Thursday night preview showings. Black Panther raked in a whopping $25 million on opening night, an impressive feat for a single-hero film. By contrast, Ant-Man and the Wasp, which came out the same year, made $11.5 million on Thursday night preview showings.
Clearly, Black Panther set an immensely high bar, but the sequel is already at its heels with a higher opening night than the original. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been projected to gross within the $175 to $200 million range, the latter of which would make it the highest domestic opening of 2022.
Since the majority of the MCU's highest-grossing movies of all time, both internationally and domestically, are from Phases 3 and 4 of the franchise , the projections for Marvel's later releases in terms of box office are promising, so Black Panther: Wakanda Forever could potentially earn a place on that list.
