Black Maternal Health Week began Monday, April 11, and runs through April 17, 2022. The initiative was created several years by Black Mamas Matter Alliance to bring national awareness to health issues affecting Black pregnant women.

Dr. Baha Sibai, a maternal-fetal medicine physician with UT Health Houston/UT Physicians, said racial disparities, lack of access to care, and underlying chronic conditions are other factors attributing to the inequity. Dr. Sibai was among researchers from 60 hospitals and clinics across the country that found treating pregnant women with mild hypertension before it becomes severe can be lifesaving. Dr. Sibai says the 6-year study involved 2,400 women of which half were Black.

He said for years doctors would treat pregnant women for severe high blood pressure but not mild cases to adhere to medical guidelines. The Biden-Harris Administration remains fully committed to ameliorating these unacceptable disparities and building a health care system that is equitable and safe for Black families. The inequities that Black mothers face are not isolated incidents but, rather, the byproduct of systemic racism in our society that has festered for far too long.
