Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day, Dawn Butler MP writes about understanding each other’s history and journeyTHIS COMING Friday marks Holocaust Memorial Day, let’s boost Black-Jewish solidarity. This year’s theme is ordinary people, and what we can all do to challenge prejudice today.
SOLIDARITY: Dawn Butler MP says there should be no rivalry between remembering the Holocaust and slavery. I defy anyone to hear these testimonies and not be shaken by the brutality inflicted on them and their loved ones. As the years pass, we lose more and more voices of the living history who lived through these atrocities, we must take time to listen and understand and commit to ensuring it’s never repeated. The Community Security Trust, a charity which monitors antisemitism, has figures which show levels of antisemitism remain stubbornly high.
It would be offensive to set up some sort of rivalry between the holocaust and slavery, both must rightly be acknowledged and remembered. That solidarity between our communities is so important. The right in this country is constantly playing ‘divide and rule’ with our communities, turning us against each other with their despicable culture wars. We have to get wise to it. And that means we must work together to overcome.
