The Black Hat USA 2024 conference offered deep dives into the technical aspects of protection products from Cisco, HPE, IBM and many more for cybersecurity practitioners.
Black Hat has always been an intriguing event to me. It takes its name from the malicious hackers who take on ethical “white hat” defenders, yet the audience is full of white hats from the corporate IT world. It’s also staged on a decidedly smaller scale than RSA Conference, emphasizing training and deeper dives into the technical aspects of protection suites and architectures for cybersecurity practitioners.
This year, I attended Black Hat for the first time in Las Vegas. I left with an appreciation for what the conference aims to achieve, especially given the industry’s need for well-trained cyber professionals. Let’s take a look at some of the key themes, security infrastructure announcements and conversations that emerged from the event.and the upcoming U.S. presidential election in November.
As I also expected, Black Hat breakout and training sessions focused on identity access management, data protection, threat detection and response, shared cybersecurity responsibility, endpoint security and cloud security. From my perspective, identity has become the hack du jour. GenAI is enabling newfound sophistication in creating deepfakes and socially engineered breaches that are accelerating ransomware attacks, denial of service attacks and data theft.
— Fortinet recently announced a data loss prevention acquisition: Next DLP. Fortinet believes that it can improve its anomaly detection and classification capabilities by leveraging Next DLP’s machine learning and AI intellectual property. On the surface, it appears to be a compelling capability, managing risk across a wide expanse of secure networking deployments.— Network detection and response can be an effective tool for monitoring and detecting suspicious activity.
