A cool new coffee table book from a beloved Austin writer captures rodeos of the ‘70s Soul Circuit .Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” was playing as the Black cowboy stood on his saddle and started dancing. This was 1978, at a raucous nighttime rodeo in Bastrop, Texas, and Sarah Bird was young and in love.

You could spend a day developing negatives, but now you can do that much faster and more precisely, and you don’t have to suck up toxic chemicals.Oh, I don’t care! It was a sexier time. The photojournalists were very attractive people. A lot of jock energy. My father was a reconnaissance pilot, and those guys reminded me of his friends. A lot of testosterone.
I’m struck by how cool and contemporary the photos look. You could tell me these guys were from Brooklyn in 2024, and I’d believe you.There’s been such a huge explosion of interest in Black rodeo and Black history in the West, but Western fashion was a bird’s nest on the ground waiting to be scooped up. The look is timeless. I try to make the point that there were Black cowboys before Beyoncé released her latest album.
