A research psychologist is urging those in the mental health field to do more research on the interaction of autistic minority groups with law enforcement.
Black, autistic youth face unique interaction challenges with police, study findsHere's how to get fabulous items to make life around the house easier, more organized and tidy — all while saving big.– Psychology researcher Ashlee Flanagan set to explore the relationship between black autistic youth and police officers.
“We know there is a really ripe and complex history between law enforcement and black individuals in the United States,” Flanagan said. “But we don’t have much research out there about black autistic individuals or black youth and police officers. And so that’s sort of what undergirded the interest in this study.”
Flanagan’s survey showed that black caregivers are concerned about the training that law enforcement officers receive on how to deal with and interact with autistic youth. They were concerned about how autistic behaviors are police. The physicality of their child, the race and sex of their child, mostly boys, were raised as concerns, she explained.
