James Cameron debunks claims that O.J. Simpson was originally cast in Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in The Terminator. 'I said, ‘I actually think that’s a bad idea.’ It didn’t go anywhere.”

After a bizarre casting rumor suggested that another actor was originally considered for Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in The Terminator, director James Cameron now sets the record straight. Released in 1984, The Terminator remains one of the defining films in Cameron's long and successful career. The film follows Kyle Reese , a soldier from the future who returns to the past in order to protect Sarah Conner , the mother of a crucial resistance leader, from an unstoppable killing machine.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview on Who's Talking to Chris Wallace , Cameron now debunks claims that former football player and controversial figure O.J. Simpson was originally considered for Schwarzenegger's role in The Terminator. The claim stems from Schwarzenegger himself, who said in a 2019 interview that Simpson was actually cast in the role before him.

“Very early on, a highly placed person at one of the two studios that funded that film had a brilliant idea and called me up and said, ‘Are you sitting down?’ I said, ‘Well, no, I’m not.’ He said, ‘Are you sitting? O.J. Simpson for the Terminator!’ I said, ‘I actually think that’s a bad idea.’ It didn’t go anywhere.

Schwarzenegger's villain was such a hit that he was eventually brought back in the sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, as a hero. Despite retaining the same machine-like tendencies and extreme resilience, the character flips what worked so well in the first film, becoming a robot that audiences can actually root for. Despite the lackluster response to most of the other Terminator films, it's now almost impossible to imagine any other actor playing the character.

What's Next For The Terminator Franchise? Although Cameron has not directed a film in the franchise since Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the filmmaker has stayed on as a producer. The poor reception to Terminator: Dark Fate in 2019 served as what felt like the last nail in the coffin for the franchise after several divisive entries, meaning there likely won't be another sequel for some time.
