The official renaming of the road is bittersweet, as it comes just a day after the passing of Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela.
, who was also at the unveiling of Winnie Mandela Drive, praised the City of Johannesburg for renaming William Nicol Drive after Madikizela-Mandela, saying that it was “more than just about the name, but cementing a name that symbolises our pain and suffering”.
“Our enemies are also allowed to insult us; actually her entire life [was full of insults] and it turned her into vulgar proof,” he said.
