Alaska is experiencing a brief but intense cold snap with temperatures plunging near or below zero in many areas. Cold weather advisories and extreme cold warnings are in effect as winds are expected to strengthen, particularly in Southcentral, creating hazardous wind chills. While temperatures are expected to slowly warm by Sunday, the coldest weather will be felt today.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Biting cold is the name of today’s weather, as colder air continues to settle in across the state. Despite this being a short-lived cold snap , many areas will see the cold linger through the weekend. Numerous areas remain under cold weather advisories or extreme cold warnings, with winds expected to increase for parts of the state later today.Colder weather is evident this morning, with many locations bottoming out near or below zero.

We’ll see today being the coldest, with temperatures slowly warming into the 20s by Sunday. Coastal activity will increase this weekend, with snow and rain looking likely next week. This comes as temperatures are set to warm near or above freezing through next week.An extreme cold warning remains in effect for Skagway and higher elevations through noon today. Winds up to 60 mph and temperatures as low as -40, will pave the wavy for a bitter cold day.

Next week looks to be a wet and warm one for Southeast. While snow will be the initial precipitation, we’ll see a transition to rain as temperatures warm into the 40s. Many areas next week that remain all rain, could see upwards of 2 to 4 inches of liquid precipitation.Bitter cold air has settled into the Interior, where many locations are waking up to temperatures anywhere form 30 to 50 below this morning. The coldest locations remain near the Eastern Interior.
