A news release from the National Parks Service says the attack occurred near Giant Geyser at Old Faithful. A man who was with a family got too close to a bison, causing it to charge at the group. Regulations at Yellowstone prohibit visitors from getting within 25 yards of a bison and other large animals, such as elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes. Visitors are told to stay at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves. The park service says bison have injured more visitors to Yellowstone than any other animal. Bison can run three times faster than humans.
