Bishop McDevitt and Trinity stand out at District 3 Class 2A boys wrestling championships.
HARRISBURG — Bishop McDevitt and Trinity boys wrestling always run into each other at these multi-team meets. The Crusaders and Shamrocks once again went head-to-head at the District 3 Class 2A boys wrestling championship on Saturday, Feb.
21 at Central Dauphin East High School. The competition is always fierce between the two teams, including Saturday, when the two programs split their head-to-head matchups across the 13 weight classes. “They’re a well-coached team,” said Trinity head coach Kyle Shoop. “We’re a well-coached team and we just go after each other. There’s no love lost when we wrestle.” The guys on both sides train and wrestle together during the offseason, but when they pull on their school singlets, it’s war. “I practice with some of them,” said Trinity’s Will Detar. “I know they’re good people, but on the mat, it’s a whole different thing.” Detar defeated McDevitt’s Liam Lawler in the 133-pound semifinal match on his way to a District 3 gold medal. It’s clear that Trinity anticipates its battles with McDevitt, but how do the guys on the other side feel? “I really look forward to those matches,” said McDevitt’s Zane Crouse. “It’s a rival. We work for those matches. It’s a lot of fun beating them.”While the two programs have the utmost respect for each other and love competing against one another, Saturday’s results were decisive. Bishop McDevitt dominated Saturday’s competition, claiming six gold medals to Trinity’s two. The Crusaders also collected 261.5 team points, 119.5 more than Trinity’s 142 points. Their six gold medals matched last year’s output, and the Crusaders have now produced 42 champions since 2013, which ranks 10th all-time in District 3. McDevitt and Trinity combined for eight gold medals, leaving Cole Byler , Sam Wolford , Gavin Boyd , Kaj Miller and Caleb Tyler to win the remaining golds in their respective weight classes.
