HARRISBURG — Not that any team needs extra motivation in the playoffs when one’s season is on the line, butThe Crusaders weren’t just playing to extend their campaign another week. They made it their mission upon running out onto the field of Rocco Ortenzio Stadium to play for the venue’s namesake, gripping his No. 72 jersey in-hand with stickers on the backs of their helmets.
Junior running back Maurice Barnes, averaging 5.5 yards per carry this year, was a chain-mover with 12 carries for 83 yards, as well as a first-down reception on fourth-and-three for the Crusaders. And at the 8:17 mark in the third quarter, his 3-yard rushing touchdown enacted the running clock mercy rule up 35-0.
— Saunders on carrying Ortenzio’s jersey out, and potentially playing his last home game pending playoff seedings. “It was a tough week, tough weekend coming off a tough loss at State College and finding out Saturday afternoon that passed. It was tough. He has an unbelievable family and our players are lucky. He used to come out and talk to the team every training camp and has always followed us.
