Stone Saunders broke a record. Aidan Grella made a kick. But the only thing that mattered in the frigid air of Chapman Field on Friday night was the number three.Bishop McDevitt, in an EKG of a football game, defeated Roman Catholic in a 34-31 overtime victory to capture the PIAA 5A state championship game—the third state title in the storied history of Crusader football.
After a strong first half, Bishop McDevitt opened the third with a potential back-breaker, as Saunders set the yardage record with a 30-yard strike to Jontai Quick to put McDevitt up 21-3. After both teams traded possessions, Roman Catholic would narrow the score again, with Scott hauling in a 32-yard touchdown from Beals at 9:38 to go.
The Crusaders would make another play late, with Smith intercepting Beals with 2:28 to go. And the offense would drive to put Grella in position for a game-winning field goal at the end of regulation, but a tough 47-yard kick went wide right to force overtime.
