A Catholic bishop has appealed to thousands of Filipino expatriates in Lebanon to follow government instructions and return home safely amid escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah.A man riding a moped flashes the V-sign for victory as he drives past a poster of assassinated Hezbollah top commander Fuad Shukr, the day after his funeral, erected along the Sidon-to-Tyre highway, in southern Lebanon on Aug. 2.

“For your safety, please continue to follow the directives of the Philippine government,” Santos was quoted saying in a report by Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs said that out of an estimated 11,000 Filipinos in Lebanon, only about 1,000 have expressed willingness to return home. Santos said people in the Philippines have been praying for the migrants and their families, and reminded them that “they are not alone.”Israel and Hezbollah have been on a warpath once again after Israel declared war on Gaza-based Palestinian militant group Hamas following the latter’s surprise attack on Israel last October.

The conflict has left more than 40,000 people, nearly half of them children, dead and over 94,000 injured, according to Gaza authorities.About 2.33 million Overseas Filipino Workers were employed in various countries in 2023, according to official statistics.
