The local dip could be tied to people having children at later ages in places like Cleveland, migration of younger adults to less urban counties and shifts the pandemic had on work accessibility and lifestyle changes, experts say.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Despite increasing birth rates in the state and country in 2021 - the first time since 2014 - Cuyahoga County and other Ohio counties with densely populated areas saw another year of decreases, according to data from the Ohio Department of Health.

In 2021, Hispanic birth rates rose by 2%, the only ethnic minority to increase from the previous year.there is a decline in births, or as unemployment goes up, birth rates go down. But the COVID-19 economic slowdown - not a technical recession but still a period of mass unemployment - was different than those in the past.“They just benefited from flexibility and work from home,” Schwandt said.
Cuyahoga, Franklin, and Hamilton counties, which house the three largest cities in the state, saw a decrease in the birth rates for 2021, opposite the overall state and national trends, cleveland.com found in analyzing Ohio Department of Health data. Just a handful of smaller counties had larger decreases.Manning said she had a few hypotheses.
