Mayor Randall L. Woodfin blasts President Trump's recent executive actions targeting DEI initiatives, comparing them to restrictive policies in his home state of Alabama.
Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin strongly criticized President Donald Trump 's recent executive orders targeting Diversity , Equity , and Inclusion ( DEI ) initiatives, drawing parallels to the restrictive policies enacted in his home state of Alabama . During an appearance on CNN This Morning, Woodfin argued that Trump 's actions are a concerning trend, characterizing it as the ' Alabama -fication' of the federal government .
Woodfin expressed disappointment that the focus seems to be on eliminating DEI programs, which he believes have the potential to benefit a wider range of Americans, including White women and veterans, not just Black Americans and other minority groups. He stated, 'What message and who are you trying to communicate? And so it's beyond frustrating and disappointing. It just goes to show you that 47 told us what he would do, and he's doing it.' Woodfin also refuted claims that DEI programs have overstepped their bounds, stating, 'Look, we've made the words diversity, we've made the words equity, we've, as in others, have made those words inclusion, bad words. Inclusion is not a bad thing. There is no such thing as going too far as it relates to being inclusive. There's no such thing as going too far as it relates to equity. This is America. Equity is the right thing to do. There's no such thing as diversity being bad. America is a very diverse place. I think Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has been weaponized for some to use to say it's taken away from others.' He highlighted that Trump's executive order on Monday aims to eliminate all DEI programs from the federal government, followed by two additional actions on Tuesday targeting workplace and educational discrimination under the guise of DEI, as well as a memo to rescind a Biden administration policy prioritizing DEI hiring at the Federal Aviation Administration. Despite the controversy, a recent Fox News poll indicates that a significant portion of voters support Trump's efforts, with 29% emphasizing the 'extreme importance' of his focus on removing DEI from the government. This sentiment is particularly strong among Republicans, with 44% expressing this view, compared to 16% of Democrats and 24% of independents. Woodfin drew a connection between Trump's actions and the legislation passed by Alabama's Republican-controlled legislature in 2020, which restricted state funding for DEI programs and limited teachings on 'divisive concepts' in public universities. He concluded, 'Listen, the unfortunate part of this conversation of stripping DEI--Americans are witnessing the Alabama-fication of federal government.
