Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin unveils a new initiative to address homelessness in the city.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin stated that there are currently 350 homeless individuals on the city's streets, many of whom are struggling to stay warm during the current cold spell. He emphasized the need for a lifeline, a bridge, and a beacon of hope for these individuals facing challenging life circumstances. Woodfin announced the implementation of a homeless outreach program , the Heart Birmingham Team, which will respond to calls instead of police officers.

This initiative aims to reduce strain on emergency services and improve public spaces. The HEART program, launched on January 6th, employs nearly 20 people and operates from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The team is trained to compassionately address situations involving the homeless and connect them with resources. Artie Gilbert, director of operations, highlighted the team's focus on identifying areas with high concentrations of homelessness and offering support, including housing, food, and showers. Gilbert emphasized their commitment to helping individuals find resources and transform their lives through empathy and compassion. Mayor Woodfin stated that food and shelter are human rights and that the HEART program will provide essential support to those in need
