The state may recommend a takeover as soon as August.
Bessemer City Schools has been put on notice of a possible state takeover if the school board fails to address serious and systemic problems.
Mackey said student outcomes “do not reflect the knowledge and skills, nor the creativity and commitment of the students, families, faculty and staff of the System,” and that the Board has created a “culture of indifference” that “led to a system that cannot adequately support its students.” Enrollment among Bessemer City’s seven schools has declined by nearly 1,000 students in the last 10 years, dropping from 4,000 students in 2014 to 3,000 students last year. Eight in 10 students are economically disadvantaged, an indicator of the level of poverty in the district.
Six of the seven elected school board members met for nearly three hours Tuesday night to discuss the concerns Mackey raised. “September of 2022 is when I reached out to Dr. Mackey’s office begging for assistance both academically and financially,” Hughes told AL.com. AL.com was unable to immediately confirm when the department began investigating concerns in the Bessemer school system.
