April is prime time for birding in the Houston area. Houston birding expert Gary Clark offers weekly sighting and identification tips, while Kathy Adams Clark captures even the most elusive birds.

Egrets build their nests near water to protect them from predators.The High Island Waterbird Rookery is a great place to watch the mating rituals of great egrets and other waterbirds.Northern parula are a neotropical migrant that winter from Caribbean, Mexico and Central America. They breed from Texas to the mid-west, the eastern US, and southern Canada.

Woodpeckers, like this red-bellied woodpecker, are drumming to communicate during mating season.Rose-breasted grosbeak will move through our area from April to early May. Look for them in backyards, gardens, parks, and area bird sanctuaries.Roseate spoonbill are one of the nesting waterbirds you can see at the High Island Waterbird Rookery this spring.Roseate spoonbills are pink like a flamingo but they have a very different beak.
