Devin Justine, a photographer, was six months pregnant with her second child when she and her husband, Brendan Cleary, decided to end their eight-year marriage. Despite the emotional turmoil, Justine and Cleary, determined to prioritize their children, opted for an unorthodox custody arrangement known as birdnesting.
Inspiried by the nesting behavior of certain birds, where the offspring remain in the same nest while parents take turns caring for them, the two agreed that their children would stay in the family home while they alternated living there. \Two years later, Justine and Cleary, both 33, are proud of the stable environment they have created for their 2-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. When Cleary has the house, Justine resides nearby with her parents. As a firefighter, Cleary often works night shifts and sleeps at the station, eliminating the need for a separate apartment. Justine reveals that they are currently building a garage apartment on their shared property, which will serve as an alternative living space once completed. This arrangement, Justine emphasizes, ensures that their children have a sense of continuity and stability, something she yearned for during her own childhood marred by divorce. \While the birdnesting approach is currently working well for Justine and Cleary, they acknowledge that challenges may arise in the future, especially if either of them enters a serious relationship. Parenting expert Dr. Deborah Gilboa, while highlighting the advantages of birdnesting, such as minimizing the disruption for children and fostering a sense of belonging, also points out potential drawbacks. She cautions that children might assume an undue sense of responsibility for the home or feel burdened if tensions between parents escalate. Justine and Cleary, however, remain optimistic. They believe that open communication, mutual respect, and a commitment to their children's well-being will pave the way for a successful and enduring birdnesting journey
