Summary Among the films that made their debut at the 2024 South by Southwest Festival was the Australian indie, Birdeater. The film explores the complex themes around toxic masculinity in young adults and was shot on a shoestring budget in a small secluded town in New South Wales, Australia.
Jim Weir: Yeah. I think conversationally in Australia, there's a lot of levity. People are kind of rarely earnest with each other. Usually, we're just having a laugh, but I think there are also artists who like to go a bit darker in their work to balance that out. That's what we wanted to explore as well in our movie, that kind of combination of comedy and quite dark themes as well.
Jim and Jack, can you guys bring us a little bit into the creation of this story and how you sort of landed on this couple? Can you talk a little bit about the origins of the actual story? Another trend I love that's developed within genre filmmaking specifically is the director duo names, and you guys have got a good one. I mean, we've seen Radio Silence, there's RackaRacka, and you guys are Fax Machine. How did you land on Fax Machine of all names?
Jim Weir: Very, very talented composer, Andreas. We met him at film school, and all of the score was done analog for the most part, recorded in his bedroom at his share house that was super rinky dinky. He just made this very, very grand score. He worked very, very hard on it. Mackenzie Fearnley: Well, I think initially it was quite an individual thing, focusing on building your own idea about the relationship, about the character, about the story. Because we did have quite a long pre-production process, but it was fairly interrupted in terms of COVID and a few other things that were out of our control.
