At least 15 dead Canada geese have been found in and around Lower Lake in recent days and the cause of death is believed to be Avian influenza, said Zach Hillman, Cuyahoga County wildlife officer for the state Division of Wildlife.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio –

Hillman said he collected two dead birds on March 15 and had them sent to the U.S. Geological Survey National Wildlife Center for testing. He said it has not been confirmed that bird flu is the culprit, but that is the suspicion. He said he doesn’t think there is anything in the water or on land that would have killed the birds.

If it is Avian influenza, there is no cure or treatment, he said. “It’s kind of one of those things that the birds have to get through naturally.” Such outbreaks of Avian influenza happen from time to time, Hillman said. The virus is spread among birds when they come in contact with each other, he said, such as when they are nesting and fighting with other pairs.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
